The only productivity rule that really works

by Livia Iacolare on January 10, 2008

I don’t like sites that tell me how I can spend my time without wasting it. Mostly because what they consider to be “valuable” has absolutely no value at all to me. All these sites are artfully crafted to make you feel like a retarded, no matter what.

Their editors usually bomb you with loads of bulleted lists, videos, reviews of productivity tools, audio podcasts, PowerPoint presentations and guides all of which are specifically made to make sure you waste even more time in front of your computer.

There is only one thing you can do in order to keep yourself productive: switch off the modem.

It’s true that a little wise advice goes a long way, and we all need that occasionally. What you’re referring to [with the exception of the excellent and multi-layered site 43 Folders] is an onslaught of empty dreck. This is all white noise obscuring the real issue: people need more solitude. It’s amazing how many people seem to be afraid to be alone in their own head. Go anywhere and count how many people are on cells, listening to iPods, texting on Blackberrys. Great devices all, but not if they keep you from the real business of thinking.

It’s a relativity problem or… to make it simpler… point of view problem. What makes you upset could make someone else happy… in terms of productivity.
